Al-Khwarizmi
mathematics

The word “algorithm” is derived from the Latinization of his name, and the word "algebra" is derived from the Latinization of "al-jabr", part of the title of his most famous book, in which he introduced the fundamental algebraic methods and techniques for solving equations.

Perhaps his most important contribution to mathematics was his strong advocacy of the Hindu numerical system, which Al-Khwarizmi recognized as having the power and efficiency needed to revolutionize Islamic and Western mathematics. The Hindu numerals 1 - 9 and 0 - which have since become known as Hindu-Arabic numerals - were soon adopted by the entire Islamic world. Later, with translations of Al-Khwarizmi’s work into Latin by Adelard of Bath and others in the 12th Century, and with the influence of Fibonacci’s “Liber Abaci” they would be adopted throughout Europe as well.

What does "Engineering Mathematics" mean ? How is engineering mathematics different from any other sort of mathematics ? Does it has an underlying philosophy or approach ?

To address these questions, we need to firstly need acknowledge that most people who teach engineering mathematics don't generally see themselves as engineering mathematicians but normally identify themselves as either a mathematican who teaches engineers, an applied mathematician or an engineer who teaches mathematics. Not surprisingly, ideas about "Engineering Mathematics" reflect these different backgrounds and perspectives, so a generally agreed defintion and overall philisophy is unlikely. I think qustions about the nature of engineering mathematics point to a related question - what is engineering ?

"the profession in which the knowledge of the mathematical and physical sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilise economics, materials and forces of nature for the progressive well being of human kind" the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man"

A) Engineers need to understand how mathematical principles can be applied to practical problems.

B) Engineers need to be confortable with using mathematics as a tool to inform judgements and choices.

C) Engineers need education in fundamental aspects of mathematics, in so far as a means of developing the skills associated the applications and forming judgements on technical matters.

**ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT**

Mathematics is a part of Bachelor of Engineering curriculum. Department of Mathematic started as a basic Science Department in HMS Institute of Technology in the Academic year 1997-98 with intake of 180 students. However the growth of department is rapid and reached the strength of 420 students. This growth is as a result of recognition to the Institution among the Public in Nation-wide.

The students are able,

- To identify the concepts and philosophy of Mathematics from their Respective Engineering field.
- To use the concepts and ideas of Mathematics in developing technology
- To develop innovative way of thinking in the field of engineering Mathematics
- To prepare the qualities expected by the modern and dynamic society Related to Engineering Mathematics.
- To develop self confident and self motivation through learning Mathematics
- To develop 3R's in the field of Engineering Mathematics.
- To develop reasoning capacity and conscious feeling in answering Mathematics related to Engineering.
- To achieve self sustainable in terms of food, cloth and shelter through Learning applications of Mathematics.
- To develop human potential with high ethical standards.

The students are able

- To provide chances to expose their talents by conducting and participating in seminars and exhibitions
- To develop the sense of understanding related to Engineering Mathematics by way of providing Study material and e-Self Learning Material in addition to class room instruction.
- To develop the knowledge of analysis related to Engineering Mathematics.
- To develop the feeling of healthy competitive in university exams.
- To safe from frustration on subject due to work accumulation at the end , they are provided with class room planning with equal distribution of work load.
- To achieve over all development of the students, Individual attention is provided through motivation and counseling.
- To develop the skills in practical individual attention is provided.
- To inculcate moral values through self decipline.

**PROGRAMME OF MATHEMATICS **

Mathematics as a basic science of Engineering course, the students of all the branches of Engineering have to study the Mathematics subject for four semester during the two year of the four year Engineering programme
